[image: image.png] opening thoughts: from immigration lawyer Hassan Ahmad immigration lawyer No, the immigration law business isn’t good. I would hope oncologists don’t get excited when the cancer rate spikes. I’m asked often how’s business. I usually say I’m busy and not in a good way. It’s exhausting. I can’t turn my mind off because there’s always a fire to put out or prevent. Everyone’s worried about traveling. Vacations are getting canceled. Trips to see family, too. There’s a chill over political speech – I have clients who have deleted their entire social media profiles. Others who opt for virtual meetings because it’s safer. Others who simply don’t leave their homes. The psy op of being sent to Bukele’s House of Horrors in El Salvador is imprinted in the collective psyche of the aspiring American community. I’d be lying if I said it hadn’t crossed my mind as a native citizen. Another question I’m asked is how 2.0 differs from 1.0. A lot of it is the same: the exhaustion certainly is. But it does feel different. I think the damage being done to our institutions – and our democracy – is far more pervasive this time. Last time this administration took to democracy with a sledgehammer. This time, they’ve added a scalpel. I carry the weight of being targeted or disappeared or worse. … This administration knew where to surgically strike and knew what to do to abuse our law to create American political prisoners like Dr. Suri. It fills me with dread that I could easily piece together a slam-dunk asylum case for him if he were to go to a third country. I’ve often thought that the real measure of a country’s greatness is inversely proportional to the number of refugees it creates. Now another metric is emerging: the adoption of ideology that literally creates cruelty. Whatever we naively believed in as the good, the promise of America – it’s being incinerated. The evil of white supremacy continues to rear its ugly head, making all of what has been accomplished feel so empty. I find myself asking did it really matter? Emanicipation, suffrage, integration? When the white supremacists felt threatened they turned it all off, seemingly with no more difficulty than flipping a switch. I remember that feeling the night of the Muslim Ban at Dulles Airport in 2017. What good are laws that can just be turned off at will? But I’ll be damned if I sit on my ass waiting for the dominoes to fall. They want us running scared. They control the action, for sure. We control the reaction. Go down swinging. rethink the week *Stephen Pimpare *is Professor of Public Policy at Vermont Law and Graduate School. *Bob Hennelly ** Hosts What’s Going On!*He’s an award winning print and broadcast journalist and staff reporter *Lincoln Mitchell* teaches political science and public policy at Columbia University. topics: Dartmouth was the only Ivy League that did not sign the letter standing up to Trump…read this and you will understand why:
