Ancient and Modern #124: Afghanistan to Brooklyn On this anniversary of 9/11, we sample some music of Afghanistan: Melody for Flute from Turkestan. A viola duo came to visit my town from the Avaloch music center. One of their pieces was a transcription of “Limestone and Felt” by Caroline Shaw. The original is played by the Attacca Quartet. The Violin Concerto No. 2 from 1967 was Dmitri Shostakovich’s last concerto. It was a 60th birthday present for Russian violinist David Oistrakh. Marie Scheuble plays the violin. Flutist and impresario Meeranai Shim was responsible for recording Daniel Felsenfeld’s “To Committee: A self parody”.
