From his teaching post at the University of Hawaii, Japanese native Takuma Itoh wrote “Snapshots” in 2017 for the Post-Haste Reed Duo, as an exploration of some of the ways that the bassoon and alto-sax can interact with each other. The movements are Grotesque; Chain; Haunted; and Early Bird Special.
From 1939, William Schuman’s first commission was his Quartet #3. The movements are Introduction and Fugue; Intermezzo; and Rondo-Variatioins. The Lydian String Quartet performs.
past beyond is partially inspired by Wang Lu’s having met people from many different backgrounds and experiences, who, like her, happened to be recovering in a hospital ward at the same time. Musically, Wang Lu’s influences include Tibetan and Thai rituals. Recorded live at Centre Pompidou, Paris, in October of 2012, played by Susanna Malkki conducting Ensemble Intercontemporain.
