[image: image.png] Opening comment: “49% of the class of ’23 at Dartmouth, where I teach, went into finance or consulting. Even were the most ardent capitalist–I am really not that–this would be a crushing statistic. So much energy, education, & intellect hoovered up by one sector.” Prof Jeff Sharlet Doug Hall responds: The high salary folks are those who manage other people’s money. Hedge fund and mutual fund mangers, investment bankers. The irony is that they do it without taking any risk. If you manage $1 billion of others’ money and just take 1%, that gives you $10 million annually. Nice income but otherwise not a very socially rewarding job.

A federal judge recently upheld most of Oklahoma’s HB 1775, a law that many thought banned Critical Race Theory (CRT) in the state. This might sound like a win for proponents of discriminatory censorship. It’s not. The ruling delivered an ironic twist: Judge Charles Goodwin—a Trump appointee—clarified that HB 1775 permits teaching about race, racism, and related concepts like implicit bias or institutional racism. Judge Goodwin’s analysis exposes a significant gap between the law’s scope and the partisan rhetoric and public understanding surrounding it. Albeit limited to Oklahoma, the ruling implicates similar “anti-CRT” laws across the country, challenging the narrative that laws like Florida’s Stop WOKE Act prohibit meaningful conversations about racism in school. As stakeholders fight back and courts continue to weigh in, this decision could signal a major shift in the fight against discriminatory censorship in American classrooms.
