As he writes: The pre-Civil War contest between the Northern and Southern labor systems never left us entirely and is back with a vengeance today. As in the 1850s, when the South tried to extend slavery northward, so it is extending (more successfully than in the 1850s) its system northward today, as Republicans pass right-to-work and voter suppression laws in such states as Wisconsin, Indiana and Michigan. Meanwhile, European manufacturers are opening low-wage assembly factories all across the South because, believe it or not, it’s cheaper to have them there than in China.
