Part One:
We speak with Alan Berube, senior fellow and deputy director at the Brookings Institution Metropolitan Policy Program. We discuss his report “Metro Monitor 2019,” which analyzes trends for the 100 largest metropolitan areas – in terms of growth, prosperity, and inclusion (both economic and racial). Sadly, while many metro areas have seen economic growth during the last decade, only one (Portland, OR) has made progress in racial inclusion as well. Why can’t the rest of us experience similar progress?
Part Two:
We check in again with Steffen Schmidt, Professor of Political Science at Iowa State University, about the latest developments in politics, including:
— the release of the redacted Mueller report and A.G. Barr’s partisan efforts to manipulate the country’s interpretation of the report by describing Barr’s “spin” (following Pres. Trump’s talking points) on the contents, even before allowing *anyone* in the public (including Congress and the media) to see one word of the *actual* Mueller report;
— whether Democrats would be better served if they stopped focusing on Mueller and Trump and, instead, simply explained to the American public what they (the Democrats) will do — if they are elected — to make people’s lives better and our country safer; and
— how we might communicate effectively with midwesterners, including farmers, who are suffering from floods, droughts, and other immediate crises, stemming from climate change. Folks are clamoring for prompt government aid in order to survive the serious present crisis. Once they’ve gotten through this, how do we encourage them to think about the underlying causes of the present devastation, so we can, in time, prevent next year (and every year) from imposing similar crises?The Attitude with Arnie Arnesen, April 18, 2019
