Part One:
We speak with Joshua Keating, staff writer for Slate, about the history and current crisis surrounding Brexit, the United Kingdom’s process of withdrawal from the European Union. We note how little the British voters understood, at the time of the Brexit referendum, about the dire economic consequences their country would face if it left the European Economic Union. The country’s politicians seem to have locked themselves into so many conflicting positions and commitments that it is difficult to see what, if any, reasonable solutions remain with which Britain might extricate itself from disaster.
Part Two:
We discuss women’s involvement in politics with Dr. Kelly Winfrey, coordinator of research and outreach for the Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women in Politics. Dr. Winfrey talks about the way women see themselves, how this affects their voting decisions, and how the evolving roles of women in society play out as more women are running for political office, both legislative and executive.
