Part One:
We speak with Paul Glastris, editor in chief of the Washington Monthly, about the magazine’s “Other College Guide.” Unlike U.S. News & World Report’s College Guide, which rewards institutions for prestige, wealth, and exclusivity, Washington Monthly’s College Guide & Rankings calls attention to colleges that serve the best interests of the country as a whole — including by enrolling and graduating students of modest means; by training students to perform jobs that serve the public interest; by performing research that’s geared to improving society; and by encouraging students to vote.
Part Two:
We welcome Christa Case Bryant, a reporter for the Christian Science Monitor, to talk about three articles she has written recently relating to Iowa. We delve into the world of soybean production, including its many uses (“beyond edamame”) and its importance as an export product that helps our country’s international balance of trade.
In particular, we discuss the damage to the soybean industry which has already resulted from Trump’s trade war with China, and which could well inflict irreparable injury to our economy’s ability to thrive in a global economy.
