Part 1
Arnie Arnesen and Scott Braddock
Discussion of the recent impeachment vote in the House of Representatives, the first time it was brought to the floor. The reason was the recent racist tweets and speech by Trump. There was also discussion of the threats posed by Trump’s rhetoric which implies threats of violence around the 2020 presidential election. It appears that race will be a major issue in that election.
Noted was the visit of VP Pence to the border detention facility in Texas, and Sen. Cornyn’s participation. Texas is spending $800 M every two years for border protection.
Texas has not allocated any money to support the census, which appears self-defeating, since this makes an undercount more likely. Texas will be losing the opportunity to gain power in the next decade as a result. Population in Texas has been growing, and the growth is likely to continue.
Part 2
Arnie Arnesen and Robert Azzi. TheOther.Azzi@gmail.com and TheOtherAzzi.wordpress.com.
Discussion of the racist tweets and speeches by Trump. Trump’s supporters appear to be blaming their economic problems on ‘others’ who are immigrants, or people of color.
The climate in the US is now a general perception that there is scarcity of resources, money, etc. And this is due to the presence of ‘others’. Azzi sees that the Trump supporters are not only reluctant to admit their own origins, in fear of being labeled as ‘others’. One example he cited was John Sununu, the governor, whose origins are in Palestine. This is an indicator of the cowardice of politicians and the concessions made to the far right. Republicans are now completely coopted by Trump. The danger is that catastrophic climate change may be ignored because of the attention needed to combat racism in discussions about the 2020 election.
