We “rethink the week” with Bill Curry, two-time Democratic nominee for Governor of Connecticut and a White House advisor in Bill Clinton’s administration, and Mark Fernald, attorney and former gubernatorial candidate in New Hampshire. We discuss the war for the soul of the Democratic Party. Nominating a centrist candidate and avoiding discussion of controversial issues has not achieved the results we want. In the absence of a strong voice articulating a people-oriented vision for the future, Americans turned to Donald Trump. He sounded like a strong leader, he was sure of himself, and he represented a change. It turned out that the kind of change that Trump offered has not benefited ordinary people, only America’s elites, the rich and the powerful, the 1%.
We analyze the campaigns of various Democratic candidates for president, and the extent to which each of them articulates ideas and policies that will be able to gain support (and win votes) from the majority of Americans.
