Part One:
We speak with David Dayan, executive editor of The American Prospect, about his article: “Monopolists’ Worst Nightmare: An Interview with Elizabeth Warren.” We follow up on our show earlier this week about the increasing concentration of economic power in the hands of fewer and fewer mega-corporations – and the dark money and political power that distorts our democratic system. Sen. Warren explains these complex issues clearly enough – and connects the dots among various inter-related facets – that voters are understanding where the problems lie. And they are connecting with Warren because of this. They “get it” that she is speaking for the 99% together, not trying to divide them. And they recognize that their problems do not stem from minorities, immigrants or other marginalized people, but rather from the corporate interests which wield too much power.
Part Two:
We chat again with “Dr. Politics,” Steffen Schmidt, professor of political science at Iowa State University. We discuss non-partisan redistricting after the 2020 election and the cost of protecting cities from being ravaged by climate change (how much will it cost and which city will be saved first?). We also discuss the value of the federal government’s contributions to every American’s well-being (Medicare preventing our elders from dying; the military inventing the internet), and the damage we all suffer when industries are unregulated (Are Boeing 747s the poster child for deregulation? Was the Great Recession caused by deregulation of the financial sector?)
