We rethink the week with Dean Spiliotis, Civic Scholar and Presidential Scholar at Southern New Hampshire University; Steffen Schmidt, affectionately known as “Dr. Politics,” professor of political science at Iowa State Univ.; and Steven Greene, professor of political science at Univ of Durham (England).
A RUDE AWAKENING
Among other topics, we discuss the embarrassing lack of turnout at Pres. Trump’s campaign rally in Tulsa. Trump should have known better than to schedule the rally in this city at this time , with COVID-19 starting to surge in Tulsa and elsewhere.
THE REPUBLICAN FISH IS ROTTING FROM THE HEAD DOWN
We observe that not only Trump but also a number of Republican Senators and other down-ballot candidates are facing potential upsets at the polls. Commentators are starting to talk about the possibility that the Republicans will lose control of the Senate (but don’t jinx it).
THE SOUR SMELL OF CORRUPTION
Pres. Trump (through AG Barr) announced that he would fire the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, the most independent and competent federal prosecution office in the country. Why? Did he make some kind of mistake in carrying out his duties? No. He exercised his prosecutorial discretion to pursue an investigation into Trump’s past corrupt acts, and he wouldn’t back down. But, just as he did in the cases of Roger Stone and Michael Flynn, Trump did everything he could to make sure that the law did not apply equally to him and his cronies.
