We Rethink the Week with Ron Abramson, NH immigration lawyer; Dave Levinson, federal policy editor and senior political reporter for the Center for Public Integrity; and Bill Curry, two-time Democratic nominee for Governor of Connecticut and a White House advisor in Bill Clinton’s administration.
We discuss the tragic murders of 50 Muslims while praying in their mosque in New Zealand, and what this crime shows about the rise of bigotry and violence inspired by the hateful words and actions of Pres Trump and white supremacists, nationalists and xenophobes. In contrast, we note the compassionate and supportive response of a growing majority of people (including the Prime Minister of New Zealand) in solidarity with our Muslim brothers and sisters.
We also discuss the growing number of candidates for the Democratic presidential nomination in the US. A hopeful sign is that some of the candidates are talking about specific details of substantive policy proposals, rather than simply mouthing rhetorical themes to rally a crowd. In addition, more than one candidate is addressing the moral values that should underlie all policies: knowing the difference between right and wrong, looking inside our own hearts before we jump to conclusions, recognizing the humanity of other people and hearing their narratives with compassion, doing unto others as we would have them do unto us.
