Part One:

We speak with Nicholas Tampio, Professor of Political Science at Fordham University, about a commission that is trying to put a value on a college education, based on the amount of money that particular college graduates earn in the decades after they graduate. The analysis places higher “value” on the vocational aspects of one’s education, and a lower “value” on liberal arts classes, music and art. The study doesn’t even consider other aspects of a college education: teaching the next generation about ethical and moral values, working together as part of a community larger than oneself, and creativity (thinking outside the box).

Part Two:

We check in again with “Dr. Politics,” Steffen Schmidt, professor of political science at Iowa State University. We discuss Pres. Trump’s trade war with China and the huge impact this is having on Americans farmers and workers in the lumber industry, the lobster industry, and many others. If China reacts by re-focusing its economic strategy on Europe and other markets instead of on the United States, then these deleterious impacts could continue harming Americans for decades into the future.
We also discuss the growing erosion of one-person/one-vote. Changing demographics make it more and more likely that the person who loses the popular vote will nevertheless be elected president of the United States. Control of the U.S. Senate will also be placed in the hands of fewer and fewer state voters.
