Part Two: Nancy West is the Executive Director of InDepthNH.org, an online news site. She’s been covering the secure psychiatric unit at the NH Men’s State Prison for years, and joins us to talk about a new lawsuit. NH is the only state in the union where a person who has mental illness can wind up incarcerated without having committed a crime. The secure psychiatric unit isn’t a hospital – it’s part of the state prison. The attorney of a young man who currently incarcerated there has filed a writ of habeas corpus, seeking his release from prison to a mental health treatment facility.
