Part one: our Friday check in with Scott Braddock, the editor of the Quorum Report, the voice of Texas.
We begin our discussion of the election results in Texas. A big part of this was the Latino vote, and recognition that Latinos are not monolithic, which is something that the Republicans have learned faster than the Democrats. In Texas, the northern part of Texas votes more progressive, while in the south, they are more conservative. It’s to be noted that Latinos are the fastest immigrants to be assimilated. In the case of Latinos, demographics are not destiny, but opportunity for political parties. They represent new voters.
The FBI is now investigating, Ken Paxton, the Attorney General, for corruption and abuse of office. These charges have been brought by his former staffers. If Paxton leaves that post, that will give the governor an opportunity to choose his replacement. The governor is thinking of a presidential bid for 2024. Matthew McCounaghey is toying with running for Texas governor.
It has been suggested that 2020 be considered as a “COVID YEAR” for schools, with no standardized testing. Schools have been disrupted, and in lower-income areas, no acceptable alternatives have yet been developed.
Part two: we wrap up the week with Bill Curry, former nominee for Gov. of CT, advisor to Bill Clinton, leader in the nuclear freeze movement and progressive commentator
We discuss the unfortunate tendency of many evangelicals to deny that Covid exists. It appears that the American culture is sinking into superstition. We need consensus politics, where we hope that 60% of the populace will at least acknowedge a set of facts. “You make your heaven here” rather than just hope for a life beyond. We also need to recognize and NAME fascism when we see it.
